Our Materials

Gold Filled is a system of making jewellery that involves bonding 14 or 18k Gold under extreme heat to a base metal (usually silver). Plated jewellery usually only has a thin gold coating painted on, which is why it often tarnishes quickly and wears off. Gold Fill has a 5% level of solid gold and is water resistant, warm gold colour, has no nickel or nasties in, and is long lasting and high quality.

Gold Vermeil is a high quality product with a high proportion of gold. The Industry standard is 2.5 microns, however ours is 3 microns. The manufacturing process is heat & pressure bonding 'melted or fused together' gold with a 925 Sterling Silver base.

It’s an expensive process simply due to the weight of the gold. Great quality gold vermeil will last you years with the appropriate care!

Our Sterling Silver pieces are made with 925 purity silver by silversmiths in India.

Is your jewellery safe for sensitive skin?

Most allergies come from nickel being present in the metal but our pieces don’t contain any.

Some of our pieces are 18k Gold bonded to stainless steel which carries a very small risk of reaction in rare cases.

Gold Fill has at least a 5% level of 18k gold, unlike plated which can often be only 1% - so the layer is thicker and lasts much longer with careful handling.

Vermeil is our highest quality of gold with a 2.5 micron layer of 14k gold over sterling silver. Zero chance of allergy issues there 🙂

Can I swim and shower in your jewellery?

Showering is perfectly fine!

Chlorine and salt are corrosive chemicals though and so they will limit the life of your jewels with prolonged exposure. Rinse them in clear water after an ocean dunk and keep them away from retinol and sunscreens - that’s only good for your face 😉 - Careful handling will keep you and your jewels golden!

What is Gold Filled/ Gold Vermeil?

Solid Gold is naturally the only gold that can be classed as long lasting, or worthy of being called potential heirloom jewellery - it has the price tag to match, and can still lose its lustre over many years. If you've paid $100 for a bracelet it won't be solid gold and it won't be getting handed down to your grandchildren, anymore than the $100 Zara top will be. That's just the truth though many jewellery brands want you to believe otherwise.

Gold Filled is a system of making jewellery that involves bonding 14 or 18k Gold under extreme heat to a base metal (usually silver or brass). Plated jewellery usually only has a thin 0.5% gold coating electroplated onto a base, which is why it often tarnishes quickly and wears off. Gold Filled has a 5% level of solid gold and is more water resistant, has a warm gold colour, has no nickel or nasties in, and is longer lasting than normal plated and higher quality.

Gold Vermeil is classed as Demi-fine jewellery. It contains totally precious metal (925 Sterling Silver with a 2.5 or 3 micron 14 or 18k Gold layer ‘melted’/bonded to the top) It’s expensive because of the weight of precious metal gold and silver used, and the techniques used to make it.

The colour of gold is determined by two factors:

  • The type of metal alloys included
  • The percentage of each metal alloy

Natural gold and colour-saturated base alloys are what give yellow gold jewellery its rich shine. The alloys most commonly used, are copper with a red hue, and silver featuring a green hue. An expert mixture of copper, silver and pure gold gives this precious metal its signature warmth.

Gold-filled pieces can still tarnish, but it takes special circumstances for that to happen, like excessive and water based use. Even though it’s an alloy, the thick layer on gold-filled pieces helps prevent tarnishing, because pure gold doesn’t tarnish.
